Most pet owners are responsible and caring but there are unfortunate animals that find themselves lost, abandoned, neglected or the victims of cruelty.
There are organizations to help and Denver animal shelters contribute to animal welfare in the city. Most organizations devoted to animal care are non-profit and they rely on donations from the general public.
Many shelters are run by volunteers. They will never put a healthy animal down.
The Denver Municipal Animal Shelter is located on Jason Street and deals with hundreds of new dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and other small animals each week. Donations are welcome and are tax deductible. This Denver animal shelter is a part of the Division of Animal Control and operates an adopt a pet scheme for a small fee. Read the rest of this entry
Cats are well-known for being thoroughly tractable pets.
Even the most ornery cats are generally willing to keep to themselves if left alone.
It is true that some cats will scratch other pets, play rough with kids, or develop other sorts of behavior problems, but at their worst they are generally much better than bad dogs.
Unfortunately, the flip side of this is that cats are notoriously hard to train. They tend to not develop as many bad behaviors, but it is almost impossible to teach them to develop good behaviors.
Puppies require continual nutritional support in order to maintain a healthy growing body. To keep up with their needs they should have food available to them throughout the day.
There are three popular methods for feeding your new puppy.
Mealtime Feeding
Portion-Control Feeding
Free Feeding
Mealtime Feeding – This methods is idea for young puppies who are being housetrained. This technique usually involves mixing solid food and canned food. Your puppy gets her meals at different times throughout the day. Most dog owners prefer to feed their puppies three meals a day, but there are some people who opt for four meals a day.
It doesn’t really matter if you are feeding your puppy three or four meals a day. The key is to remember to divide their food in equal portions across your chosen number of feedings. It is also more convenient if you schedule the feedings so you do not have to wake up during the night to feed your hungry puppy.
If you choose to feed her three times per day then every eight hours is a good schedule. If you decide on four meals a day then feed her every six hours instead. Keep in mind, however, that you should not reduce your puppy to two meals per day until she is at least five or six months old.
So what is the proper amount of food to feed a puppy?
Portion-Control Feeding – This is probably the most common method of feeding your puppy used today. This is especially helpful for those people who need to work during the day, leaving their puppy home alone.
In this method, you calculate how much food your puppy needs depending on her age, and type of breed. This amount of food is left in her bowl at the same time everyday, usually in the morning before you go to work. Remember to adjust the amount of food you are giving your puppy as she gets older.
By using this method your puppy will be able to nibble on food throughout the day as she gets hungry. Most puppies will only eat a small amount of food at a time. Some puppies will empty their bowls all at one time. However, studies have shown that puppies raised using this feeding method are less likely to overeat when they mature into adult dogs.
If you are having trouble house training your puppy then this method will probably not work for you and is best avoided.
Free Feeding – In this method you make sure that there is always food available in your puppy’s bowl. She is then allowed to nibble on it throughout the day whenever she likes.
This is of course the easiest method to follow since you just make sure you keep filling her bowl. However, it is the method least recommended by vets and breeders. Using this method to feed your puppy makes it harder to housebreak her since you are never really sure when she eats. You also do not have a good idea of how much she is actually eating on a daily basis.
There are several types of dog crates to choose from. It all depends on what you need the crate for and how big your dog is. There are a few things that you must keep in mind while shopping for a new crate for your dog. Are you traveling and how? How big is your dog? Is your dog scared of people? Does your dog like to bark a lot? What can you fit in your budget?
There are crates that are more like fence material. There is also plastic that you may want to choose from. There are some that you would have the convenience of collapsing and storing easily.
Remember that puppies grow. So if you invest in a small crate or kennel for your small boxer puppy, keep in mind the cost of the crate and the fact that the puppy will get bigger. Are you willing to invest in something that he will outgrow in a couple months?
Is this something that you are wanting your puppy to stay in during the day while you are at work? Keep in mind that if it is enclosed, your puppy may be uncomfortable and scared. Perhaps a larger fence like crate may be in his best interest. That way he has room to roam a little. It is an open crate to where he can see things around him. Also there is plenty of room for him to grow.
There may be times when you need to travel on an airplane and need to bring your pet with you. In this case, you may consider a light plastic crate because it is easier to carry and it is enclosed to where other animals won’t cause him to bark or he won’t get nervous. Not to mention you want one that he can just fit in and be secure. There are certain requirements for traveling on an airplane with dogs as well. Be sure to check with the airline to see about their guidelines and rules.
If you plan to use a crate on a regular basis, the best thing to do is to make sure that he starts out using it as soon as possible so that he can get use to it. For instance, if he needs to be puppysat, it is best that he gets use to the crate because as he travels to other places and sees other people in a strange environment, he would be familiar with the surroundings within his crate.
It would be (to him) a lot like home. It would provide him with the security that he would need so that he feels much more content. A lot of people would want to use a crate for the purpose of keeping him contained at night. In this case the crate is his ‘bed’. It should be a place where he is comfortable and secure. It is not recommended to use it for punishment and security, because that would be two separate purposes and may even confuse the puppy.
When shopping for a crate, keep in mind whether or not you would want plastic or metal. Some puppies like to chew a lot and that can even be the case as they get older. In this case the best type of crate would most likely be a metal crate versus the plastic type. When this happens, be sure to include toys and raw hide bones. Not to mention they can be very lonely and bored all day in a little confinement. Eventually they will get use to it but it is still good to make sure that they are as comfortable as possible.
Some dogs have separation anxiety, such as a Mastiff, so purchasing the largest crate is the best. The reason being is so that they have some space to move. Definitely start them out as soon as possible so that it becomes part of their everyday routine.
Another good thing to remember is that dogs that are being house broken may have a hard time being broken. Therefore, you may want to put them in a crate. Dogs are less prone to pottying in their bed area. They are less likely to dirty it up and will wait as long as possible before pottying. With that said, crates are good for house breaking dogs.
You may consider a large crate and in this case it is best to get one that is collapsible so that you can store it when you are through with it. They have some that are stainless steel so that they will last a long time. Then for moving and traveling or for your smaller dogs. The choice is up to you so keep all of these tips in mind. There are many benefits for you, your dog and even your home, in using a crate. You can find them in pet stores and even online.

Traveling with your dog can be quite challenging. There are several issues that can arise while traveling with your dog in the car.
These problems are quite often stress or anxiety related. It is especially true if your dog is scared of the car or is not used to being inside the car while it is moving. Traveling by car can also be a challenge if you have a dog with loads of energy who just can’t seem to sit still for any extended period of time.
Some dogs may associate traveling in the car with negative experiences and that can also cause some issues.
If you are having problems getting your dog to travel in your car with you or even to just get her inside the car, practicing the following suggestions may be just the thing for you and your dog. Once she can get over her fears and anxiety traveling in the car will be a wonderful experience for her as well as peace of mind for you.
Practice these exercise for at least one week before your trip…
While your car is parked in your driveway open the back door and put your dog inside. At this point make sure the engine is not running so as not to scare her while she is inside. Give her a toy, a chew bone, or a treat and leave her in the back seat for a short while. This will start getting her used to being inside the car and the toy, bone, or treat will create the positive experience.
Once you can see that she is becoming comfortable with being in the back seat of the car, close the door. Make sure that the windows are down. Then you get in the drivers seat and sit there for a while. This will get her used to being inside the closed car with the reassurance that you are there also.
Finally, when she seems to be comfortable being inside the closed car, start the engine and take her for a short ride. It can be something as simple as a drive around the block. The idea is to get her used to being locked inside a moving car. Make sure she still has her toy or chew bone with her. After the drive is over be sure to give her a treat and lots of praise.
Now just repeat this process increasing the distance of the trip each time. Pretty soon she will begin to look forward to riding in the car.
If you can, take her on any short trips or errands you may make. For example, every morning I take Misha with me when I drop the boys off at school. As soon as they come downstairs with their book bags she runs and sits at the door, just waiting to go.
She enjoys the ride to school just laying in the back seat. When we get there and the boys leave, however, she starts to whimper. But that is a story for another day.
Crate training a new puppy offers many benefits when it comes to teaching your new pet the correct behavior. A crate will first of all offer a puppy a warm and secure environment to sleep in. Secondly, your puppy will have a secure area for those times when it is not possible for you to keep an eye on him. This will prevent your puppy from finding objects such as shoes, the bedspread, or your new sofa to chew on.
And lastly, but certainly not least, puppy crate training is one of the most effective means of housebreaking your new puppy. From an early age, dogs learn not to eliminate in the same location that they sleep. This means that when your puppy spends time in his crate, he will understand that he is able to hold his urge to go to the toilet until he is in a suitable place with which to go to the bathroom.
Purchasing A Crate or Pet Cage.
It is advisable to shop for the best deal on pet cages for sale before bringing home your new canine friend, if you feel that crate training is suitable for your puppy. By purchasing a crate in advance, your puppy can become accustomed to crate training from the very beginning. It is advisable to purchase a crate that will allow your puppy enough space to turn around in and stand up. However, ensure that it is not too large that he will be able to find a corner to use as his toilet.
If you are searching for a crate that will grow as your dog does, there are those pet cages available with temporary dividing walls. These types are ideal as you can section off a smaller area whilst your dog is still a puppy, and move or remove the dividing walls as your dog grows. A blanket can be placed inside the crate for your puppy to sleep on and a chew toy or two is always a good idea.
Leave the food and water in a separate eating area outside of the crate. When you initially bring your new puppy home, you should show him the crate, but do not place him in it immediately. It is better to allow the puppy to wander in and out of the crate to begin with at leisure, until he becomes accustomed to the area. This is the most effective method of puppy training.
When to Use your Puppy Crate Training
Your puppy will generally become accustomed to his crate within the first few hours of being in your home. It is after this time that you can use this space to confine the puppy at night and at times when it is not possible for you to keep a close eye on him. Never, under any circumstances, confine your puppy to the crate for more than a couple of hours at a time, unless it is for overnight sleeping of course.
During the daytime, your puppy may need to eliminate more frequently. Ensure that your puppy is taken outdoors to go to the bathroom and don’t forget to spend time playing and cuddling him also. When a dog is confined to their crate from a young age, you may find that they do not socialize with people and other animals.
canine cages are used in order to teach your dog good bathroom habits, as well as teaching him what he can and cannot chew which falls under aggressive puppy training. Crates should never, under any circumstances, be used as a substitute for quality time with you. Remember that dogs need love and attention just as we humans do.

Caring for the Ears: Most hamsters do not need any help keeping their ears clean. Hamsters seem to take great pride in keeping themselves clean everyday. In reality, a hamster may spend up to 20 percent of their day grooming.
If your hamster’s ears seem red, inflamed, or infected you should take a closer look. You may also want to check the ears if your hamster is scratching excessively. Your hamster can also have ear mites. You can usually tell if you hamster has ear mites because you will see the small black parasites. If left untreated, they can result in serious issues for the hamster.
Contact your vet immediately if you notice your hamster scratching excessively, or if there is a lot of wax in the ear. You should also call your vet if you notice any discharge, redness, swelling, or odor coming from the ear. Your vet will be able to recommend a course of treatment of properly diagnosing your hamster. Do not simple assume that what you see in your hamster’s ears are ear mites. One way to check for ear mites is to take your hamster to a dark room and check the ears using a flashlight. You can also wipe your hamster’s ear with a white paper towel. Your hamster probably has ear mites if you can seem some small black dots moving around. Unless your are sure that what you are seeing are ear mites, avoid treating your hamster for ear mites on your own. Doing so can cause even more problems later on.
Although your hamster has poor eyesight, she has excellent hearing. She uses her hearing to be aware of what is going on around her. To prevent hearing loss make sure to you take proper care of your hamster’s ear and address any problems right away. If you hamster suffers from hearing loss she will become stress and disoriented.
Caring for the Eyes: Like her ears, your hamster does not need regular Caring for the Eyes. Your hamster’s eyes may get irritated sometimes. This is usually because of small particles of dust and bedding material getting into her eyes. If you see wet fur near your hamster’s eyes you should take a closer look. Watch for any squinting, discharge, or discoloration. Any of these can indicate an eye problem. Use a cotton swab and some warm water to clean the area around the eyes. Be very careful not to injure her eyes while your are trying to clean the affected area. Your hamster will be probably be squirming so just be careful. If the eye still looks like something is wrong the following day, take her to the vet right away. Any small cuts or other small injuries around the eye can cause a secondary infection. This infection can then spread to both eyes.
Older hamsters may develop cataracts. If your hamster’s eyes have a milky look, she probably has cataracts. Eventually, your hamster will become blind. Because hamsters are very near-sighted, being blind does not have a significant impact on their lives. Many hamsters will become quite shy after they go blind however. In most cases, your hamster will move about her cage like nothing is wrong.
Do not hesitate to follow up with your vet about any questions or concerns you may have about your hamster’s eyes and ears. Remember, do not put your hamster’s eyesight or her hearing in danger.
Heartworm, or roundworm, is very serious can affect all types of bird dogs. With gun dogs, working dogs, and other outdoor dogs, you must be especially concerned because they are more susceptible to heartworm. The worse case scenario is that an affected dog can pass it on to humans, as well as other dogs. In turn, you can also pass on heartworm to your own dog.
Known as a parasitic disease, roundworm can be transmitted from mosquito bites or other animals. It doesn’t affect dogs exclusively; other animals like foxes and coyotes can all contractg roundworm, meaning that should an affected animal come in contact with your dog, he will likely get heartworm. Because treatment is very difficult, heartworm prevention is the safest “treatment”. Heartworm can even kill your dog.
Preventing Roundworm/Heartworm
Giving your dog a tablet, food additive, or other preventive will greatly reduce his chances of getting infected. Tablets can be taken orally as a doggy treat while food additives are sprinkled, poured, or mixed in with food. Most preventive treatments require a monthly application, so mark a calendar to keep track of when dosage was given so you’ll know when to do it next.
In areas where there are four seasons, the primary carrier of roundworm is mosquitoes, which ingest infected blood and then give it to another animal as they sting them. In areas with less harsh seasonal changes, roundworm is more often transmitted from animal to animal. In all cases, giving your gun dog preventive treatment every month, no matter the time of year, is a best practice.
Symptoms of Roundworm
In its early stages, roundworm is very hard to detect since your dog won’t show any physcial signs of illness. Your vet can test for the disease, or skilled vets can tell by observation. It is typical of heartworm to gestate for several months before affecting your dog. During this stage of the illness, the disease can easily be treated, but it is best when your dog is asymptomatic.
Typically a dog infected with the round worm becomes lethargic and not necessarily interested in is normal daily activities. You may notice a cough or weight loss in addition to these other symptoms. Contact your veterinarian immediately because in addition to roundworm there may be other infections that may be causing the symptoms.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Roundworm
Blood tests are needed to confirm a roundworm diagnosis. It is an easy test and most vets are able to administer a blood test right in the office. Once confirmed, the vet will have to find out what stage of the illness your dog is affected with, determine whether or not the infestation is male or female, and make a final decision on the best course of treatment.
Once diagnosis has been made, treatment can begin. If the infestation has gone on for a while, it can become costly and extensive to treat. The roundworm must be destroyed completely and this is usually done through drug treatments and sometimes dialysis. It’s very taxing on your dog’s system and will result in weight loss and listlessness, especially when the worms begin to be discharged through your dog’s stool. Follow up treatments can last for months to ensure that all the worms were eliminated.
Damage to organs can also be a result of roundworm infection and can mean lifelong treatment for that as well. This is why it’s so important to catch the infection as early as possible and to not delay in getting treatment for it.
When you have any sort of hunting dog, you should always keep in mind that you should always keep your dog’s health as top priority. There are also lots of different hunting dog supplies that you should have on hand for your dog such as dog training collars or dog collars.

Training your dog is just a way of ensuring that it acts in a disciplined and adequate method. Dog training certainly is a process that involves a series of well-articulated commands repeated faithfully enough for a dog to get used to and respond to. There are countless aspects of dog training. However, obedience dog training is a fundamental training process that a dog must go through first. It is the desire of all dog owners’ that their dogs obey their direction. Once you can train your dog to obey, every other thing falls into place.
In obedience dog training, there are five basic commands or behaviors that a dog is taught. They are:
- Down: This direction is usually uttered to calm an especially exuberant dog. Your dog may be the overly excited kind that loves to paw people, lunge at them or even tug at their clothes. Teaching a dog to stay down when you order it to can assist to keep its excesses in check. The ‘down’ direction is certainly a position of subservience the dog adopts when it is being excessive in its behavior.
- Sit: You can train your dog to sit down in a precise place. This direction is good for situations where you can’t go into precise places with your dog. Teaching your dog to sit down and stay put while you shop or acquire something prevents it from wandering off and getting lost.
- Stay: The stay direction is almost similar to the sit direction except that you use it in situations where you are going to leave your dog alone for an exceptionally long period of time.
- Recall: Calling your dog to you is a direction that establishes you as the master. The recall direction is envisioned to call your dog’s attention to you and to get it to come to where you are.
- Close or loose leash walking: You need to teach your dog how to respond to a leash. One basic dog-training tool, the leash enables you to do a variety of things ranging from walking your dog to correcting your dog. A dog that isn’t used to a leash may not be able to respond favorably to your other commands.
Each of these commands is executed using different words depending on the dog trainer. Use words that your dog will easily understand and get used to.
When I decided to make a bird feeder this spring, I ran into trouble.
It wasn’t that I had any problem making one, but that I had trouble deciding on the design to begin with. There were no shortage of designs, you see, and all the bird feeder plans looked quite useful.
When I had first decided on finding plans for a bird feeder, I had thought that I would use the one that birds would find most attractive. I figured that the most pragmatic design would be the best. When I talked to a few birdwatchers, however, I found that almost any bird feeder plan would work.
It was a matter of finding something that I liked the look of. The birds would come no matter what.
Curing excessive barking dog behavior: what’s natural and what’s too much?
One of the natural characteristics of dogs is that they bark. Short of speaking English, or whatever their owner’s native language may be, barking is the quintessential dog-speak. Barking is natural to every dog on the face of the earth. Dogs bark for a number of reasons. They may bark to alert their owners to an intruder. Sometimes they bark for the sheer pleasure of howling, responding to another canine across the street, or just to let you know dinner time is long past.
Usually, when your dog barks, he’s got good reason to do so. He barks to fulfill his dog duties, typically to your benefit. He may be an avid devotee of barking by virtue of his hopes in gaining your attention. Barking is also a dog’s way of marking his territory.
In dog speak, several loud barks serve to inform the neighborhood that he’s on the job. Other dogs are warned off your territory and potential intruders are put on notice. Barking dog behaviors are subtle indicators of the ideal pet.
While the barking dog behavior is natural and in fact, desirable, when, where and how do you draw the line between normal and the excessive?
The syndrome of barking dog behavior is one of the most difficult behaviors to manage. You want to get along with your neighbors and you don’t want your pet to be a nuisance. What constitutes too much barking? Read the rest of this entry
It is certainly an unpleasant experience to have a sick hamster. It can be quite upsetting to know that your little hamster is not feeling well. Here are a few tips that you can try to help make your pet hamster feel a little more comfortable.
You should quarantine your hamster the moment you notice that she is ill. Now you can see why it is a good idea to set up a quarantine tank. This tank will allow you to quickly isolate a hamster who is ill. Setting up a quarantine tank can cost you precious time, especially since a hamster can go from bad to worse pretty quickly. Being able to isolate your hamster is a good thing for both the sick hamster and any other hamster you may have. It will protect the other hamster from getting sick too, and it will help the sick hamster by providing a place to rest and recover. It is important that you place the quarantine tank away from any other pets, family members, as well as any bright light or noise.
Feeding: A sick hamster will often stop eating. Because of their small size, this can quickly become fatal. Hamsters require regular feedings in order to give them the nutrition necessary to combat infections and illness, and to recover faster. To help them reach their food more easily, place their dish near where they sleep. To help them maintain their calorie intake, feed them high calorie foods that are easy to eat. Some good things to feed them are hard-boiled eggs, small amounts of scrambled eggs, small pieces of cooked chicken, and fruit or vegetable baby food. You can use a medicine dropper or an eye dropper to feed them the baby food. If your hamster appears to be really hungry, continue feeding her for. After a little while take a break then see if she wants some more. It is important that you take a break and do not allow your hamster to just continue eating. Instead, she will probably end up feeling worse.
Water: Providing your hamster with enough liquid is also very important. You will want to move your hamster’s water bottle closer to where she sleeps. This will make it easier for her to get a drink. For hamsters that are extremely weak, you may want to give them water in an eye dropper or a medicine dropper. Another thing you can do is to give a weak solution of half water and half unflavored electrolyte to your sick hamster.
Make your hamster comfortable: A sick hamster will sometimes stop eating and drinking. This can cause a chill. Because of this your hamster may go into hibernation. You need to keep your hamster warm. However, do not keep her too warm or she can die from a heatstroke. Provide plenty of toilet paper, but make sure that it is plain and unscented. Tear the paper into strips if you prefer. Your hamster will use the paper to make a warm bed to cuddle in. The warm nest will help to prevent her from catching a chill.
Limit the amount of activity: Remove the exercise wheel if you have to, at least until she is feeling better. Even though they are sick, some hamsters will still try to exercise. This is bad because they can get injured or dehydrated.
If your hamster seems to be getting worse contact your vet immediately.

Many Americans suffer from sinus problems every year. The number of sufferers is very high. It goes up as high as 37 million. With 32 million Americans suffering from sinus infections every year there is also about 5.8 billion dollars involved. This huge amount is just for treatment of conditions that are related to sinus infections. Those numbers come from the centers for disease control.
There are 4 kinds of sinuses. When sinuses become infected they cause a lot of pain. The moisture that is present in the sinuses is the perfect breeding ground for viruses, bacteria, and fungus. It will also attract viruses, bacteria, and fungus just like a magnet attracts metal.
Pain in the Face is a very common symptom. The sinus area becomes very tender. The whole head will hurt. The drainage of the nose is colored and thick. Sore throat is also a very common symptom. The symptoms resemble those of a regular cold.
When sinus infections come back over and over again or just stay around for an extended time period they are considered to be chronic or recurrent.
A research in 1999 that was done by the mayo clinic shows that just about all sinus infections that are chronic are caused by fungus. They left the common belief behind that says that regular bacteria are the cause of chronic sinusitis.
Antibiotics are often prescribed to cure sinus problems. Doctors do not do you a favor by prescribing antibiotics when you have sinusitis.
X-rays and CT scans can help diagnose sinusitis. Sometimes it is needed to do an MRI. Diagnosing the problem is very important.
A lot better than antibiotics to treat sinus problems is going for a treatment with Colloidal Silver. This is a supplement of mineral origin that shows a lot of positive results when used to treat sinusitis. It usually comes in a mist. This mist is brought into one of the sinuses. The contaminated surroundings are becomming affected by this mist. This mineral is also used by the space organization. Water in the space vehicle is sanitized by Colloidal Silver. Sometimes Colloidal Silver can also be used to help burn victims.
Many people think they just have a cold when in fact they suffer from a sinus infection. A common cold can however produce drainage that blocks the sinuses and cause sinusitis. If your cold lasts longer than one to two weeks, you should not assume that it is just a regular cold. Chronic sinusitis is a more likely diagnosis.

Dog owners derive considerable happiness from these trusty pets. It’s known that older people who live alone, but have a dog are happier, healthier and live longer than those who don’t have the companionship of a furry friend.
Nonetheless, our beloved canines usually are at least mischevious sometimes, beating you to the newspaper and using it for a bone.
At times, in his enthusiasm to love you, he jumps up to give you a hug and snags your favorite sweater on the way down. Then there’s downright bad dog behavior, such as snapping when annoyed or chasing the mail carrier. Dogs make wonderful pets, but they all must have training to quell their latent bad dog behavior tendencies. Read the rest of this entry
It can be a trul wonderful experience to breed golden hamsters; Before you decide on breeding your hamsters, there a number of things you should think about:
Do you have an idea of who are going to buy your baby hamsters? Around 20 to 25 days of age, baby hamsters are weaned. Around 45 days of age, they may start breeding. Shortly after they are born, the babies will need to go to their new homes. That does not give you much time. You should try to decide where your babies are going long before the time. Please, do not turn the babies loose. Some other animal will probably eat them, or they will starve to death. If by chance they live long enough to start breeding, then they will create another problem – they will become pests. They will have to go to their new homes sometime between 4 – 7 weeks old.
Do you have the required supplies as well as enough space to breed hamsters? You will have to have enough space and living area. At least four housing facilities are needed: a house for the males, one house for the females, one house for the female to give birth, and one to be used for quarantine.
Are you prepared for all the responsibilities of breeding hamsters? You need to make a considerable commitment to be able to successfully breed hamsters. Cages need to be kept very clean. Your will have more expenses because your will need more bedding, more food, and more supplies overall. You also need to remember the cages, the toys, exercise wheels, and so on. You need to be certain that you are able and willing to invest in those resources before you start breeding hamsters.
Once you have made the decision to breed your hamsters, the following steps will get you off to a great start:
1. Find a breeder with a good reputation to buy your hamsters from. Find a breeder who takes good care of their hamsters.
2. Before completing the sale, make sure to observe the hamster you are interested in closely. Is the hamster friendly? Calm? Tame? Curious? Pass on any hamster who seems overly timid or overly aggressive. These traits can pass on to their offspring, so you wouldn’t want to breed them. Instead you want a hamster that is at least not hostile, and preferable tame. Ideally, you should try to find a breeder who handles their hamsters often and even tames them before they are sold. You will probably want to get your hamsters for breeding from a good breeder. This is because the local pet store does not usually handle their hamsters often enough.
3. Keep the male hamsters separate from the female hamster until you are ready to breed them. If they are not ready to mate, the females will often abuse their male partners. About once every four days, a female hamster becomes fertile. You will know when a female hamster is fertile by the way she freezes her tail up in the air when a male hamster is around.
4. Be sure to keep a pregnant or nursing hamster away from any noise. Do not handle them too often. Remember not to touch any of the babies until they are weaned. Separate the males and females soon after weaning to prevent them from breeding.
