When you scan the pet classifieds, think pet shelters!

It’s well known that a pet brings joy and liveliness into your life. Countless studies have demonstrated the beneficial effect of a pet in the lives of older people, especially those who live alone. Older folks seem to live longer and happier lives when they have a pet.

Kids also learn that a loyal pet is an indispensable part of life, always ready to engage in play and fun, a ready ally, adventure seeker and playmate.

If you’re looking for a pet, it’s likely that you’ll first go to the pet classifieds section of the paper. This can be an iffy proposition. You want to find a pet that comes from a good home, properly weaned and raised in a loving environment.

Private sellers form the majority of advertisers in the pet classified market.

You may find that the pet classifieds offer a mix of good and bad choices. The trick is in discerning between the two. While you’ll find legitimate breeders and individuals with litters of puppies, this can be a costly proposition.

You may also be buying a dog who is being bred to exhaustion, just for the money. This isn’t good for the health of the mother or puppies, so you wouldn’t want to buy a puppy in those circumstances.

Always inquire, discreetly and politely, about the mother’s age and how many litters she’s had. You can usually get a sense of the general honesty of the seller. On the bright side, kitties are typically free!

Among the top choices in the pet classifieds are the pet shelters. Through whatever circumstances, these pets have ended up in an unwanted category. They might have been abandoned, or just got lost.

If you’re looking for a pet that will reciprocate your love and attention, the pet classifieds from the Humane Society might be your best bet. Make a visit and trust the vibes. Animals communicate their personalities, loud and clear. Don’t be looking for the thoroughbreds in these pet classifieds.

Do be looking for pets, that while they may be ‘mutts’, are the most sterling of pet friends. Mixed breeds are usually more stable in temperament as well. The pet shelters certainly offer a greater range of choices than most pet shops.

Surely you’ll find one that tugs at your heartstrings, to take home and give a loving environment.

While you’re scanning the pet classifieds, also take a look at the lost and found classifieds. Many times you’ll see a pet that someone has found, but cannot keep. You can contact them and let them know that if they don’t receive a response from the pet’s owner within a mutually agreeable, reasonable amount of time, you’d like to take that pet home yourself.

So, when searching for a pet, check out the pet shelters and see if you don’t find one to love!
