Understanding Electric Dog Training Collars
Using electric dog training collars is one of the most efficient ways of eliminating the hussle that comes with training. Pet owners have found out that these collars saves them both time and money and can even allow them to train their own pets at home, instead of taking them to a training class or hiring a dog trainer.
Kinds
Depending on how they correct dogs, electronic dog training collars are classified in three different types. The three types are electronic, sonic, and spray.
Electric Collars
The electric collars detect the vibrations caused by dogs’ barking and deliver a mild electrical shock, similar to the static shock that we feel when we handle fabrics. Some models work by having the owner activate the collar with a remote control with the press of a button.
The main advantage of the electronic collar is that it teaches a dog that barking is not allowed in certain situations, such as late at night or when visitors arrive. The set up and training procedures are simple and the collar is user friendly. The disadvantage that is attributed by some to this collar is the effects of static used on the dog.
Sound Based Collars
The other type of electronic training collars involve the use of sound. These sonic collars emit a sound that only dogs can hear and which prevents them from keep barking. These collars are usually preferred by those who think that the ones that deliver static shocks are unethical and cruel.
Citronella Spray Collars
This type of collar offers yet another approach. They are equipped with a canister which sprays the citronella when it detects the vibrations caused by barking. This is considered by some the best type of electronic collar available, although it requires some extra work, such as constantly refilling the spray canisters to keep the collar working, and taking the canister off at night so the dog can rest.
