How crucial is the gender of a puppy when choosing a pet?  Will the gender of your new dog make it easier when it comes to training?  It depends upon what you are looking for when choosing a dog. Both male and female puppies can make wonderful pets and probably the most important part of choosing a puppy is not the gender but rather the personality of the puppy and how it responds to you and your family.

The temperament, the level of required care and the size of the breed are far more crucial considerations when choosing a puppy than the gender of the puppy.  Males and females have different personality attributes but both can be well trained and either can make wonderful pets. Unless you are planning on breeding dogs you will want to make sure that your dog is spayed or neutered.  Breeding dogs is a huge responsibility and most ordinary pet owners want to give that responsibility to the professionals.  There is much more to breeding puppies than just enjoying a cute litter of puppies every so often.  If you do intend to breed puppies then you will have to deal with having your female dog go into heat every so often and making sure that your male dog does not go out roaming to find a female in heat.  Spaying and neutering just makes sense.

Male dogs are sometimes thought to be superior watchdogs because they are more territorial.  Some believe that female dogs usually have a more loving nature and a warmer temperament.  Some trainers also believe that a female dog will be more protective and maternal around young children but a male dog will have more endurance and be more playful all around. It depends on what you are wanting in a pet.

The fact of the matter is that these characteristics are all generalizations.  Male dogs can be sweet and loving and female dogs can be protective and aggressive when required.  Dogs have their own personalities and it is this personality that will mesh into your family not whether the dog is a male or a female.

Some behaviors are more prominent within a certain gender.  For example, male dogs will mark their territory more often and female dogs tend to be more independently minded.  However in times of stress a female may also mark territory and a male may show an independent streak.  It is all relative.

Housetraining may be a little bit easier with a female puppy but all puppies can be housetrained so this is not a reason to choose a puppy.  Male puppies are often used as police dogs because of their increased endurance.  It may make sense to consider the gender of your puppy if you are looking for something specific, however, a great pet is one that has a pleasing personality that meshes into your family regardless if the puppy is a male or a female.

Both males and females express their own challenges that come with raising a puppy but the rewards are the same regardless of gender.  Males and females both make wonderful pets and that is really what you want.
