Dog Care During Summer
Â
Summer is a great season for both dog and owner.Plenty of long warm days and evenings mean ideal walking conditions. For dog owners across the country there can be little better than a quick early morning walk with their pooch.A good walk is great for your health, and your dog will also benefit from the exercise and fresh air. But don’t forget that with summer comes new, unwelcome dangers to your dog.
Alfresco BBQ Parties
Everyone looks a good babrbeque. Many of us will allow our dogs to join us in the garden when cooking outdoors. But be aware that allowing your dog to be in the same space as a hot BBQ could spell disaster. The dog will not understand that the BBQ is hot, possibly until it is too late. If your dog is lively and enjoys running around it could quite easily bump into the BBQ unit. And remember, BBQ’d food does not make a healthy meals for a dog.Dogs don’t mind begging for more, so offering him one sausage will only mean he expects another. However, such greasy food offers little nutritional value and will only result in your dog becoming a fussy eater; one who expects to be fed from your plate.Instead, offer him a tasty bowl of his favourite dog food. Bones are another hazard, so never let your dog eat chicken wings or pork chops.
Water
Water is an essential part of your dog’s daily nutritional routine. As the months get warmer it becomes even more important.Make sure that you offer a bowl full of clean, fresh water with every bowl of food and when you are out and about take a bottle of water and a bowl with you.He will probably thank you with lots of wags of the tail!
Dogs in Cars
You should never, ever leave your dog alone in your car for a prolonged period of time, especially in times of hot weather. The inside of the car can rapidly overheat, causing dehydration and even death. If you have to take your dog out with you in the car make sure you take his lead with you so he can leave the car when you do. Failing that, leave him at home!
Animal Friendly Sun Screen
Just like us, dogs can suffer from sunburn. If you know your dog is going to be out in direct sunlight for a prolonged period you need to invest in some dog friendly sunscreen. The areas with a thin coat of fur can be easily affected, so pay attention to the ears and nose. You can buy pet friendly sunscreen from your vet or local pet retailer.
