Tons To Do in Redstone, Colorado In Spring
Gather your leather handbags and dog toys to Redstone, Colorado for a family vacation of fun!
Redstone, Colorado is a quirky little mountain village surrounded by breathtaking places to pitch a tent and 4-wheeling spots and the rushing Crystal river, and boasting a surprisingly fresh (if tiny) art scene on main street.
I first came across Redstone, between Carbondale and Paonia, in the beginning of the year, when the fountain in the center of town was frozen into a smooth glacier blue colossus. The one place to fill up in townhad, as usual, decorated even its pumps for the holidays, and the annual snow sculptureevent was about to commence. Redstone also holds gives sled dogs and their runners a chance to show off each year and of course a Winter Fest in February.
During the summer, Redstone is the perfect getaway to wade in the river, go for a hike, and then duck into one of several colorful (their paint jobs are a wonder to behold) down-home restaurants, where you can get a hamburger—or you can get seared ahi tuna on a bed of lettuce. Check out the BRB Crystal River Resort for cabin rentals near the Crystal and river rafting during the runoff season. There are, of course, some very lovely places for rent in the middle of town!
A trail you should try just outside of Redstone is Avalanche Creek, which also has some great spots for car camping, or you could jog on up the trail with your backpack to set up camp. This trail is off of a fairly mild dirt road (in other words, bring your Jeep, not your Toyota), which gives you a bit of adventure at the very beginning of the excursion. Although it’s 11 miles one way to get to Avalance Lake, it’s a great trail to just wander a ways downso it’s very family-friendly.
The historic aspect of Redstone is visible even before you see the town, since there will be an impressive row of coke ovens on the other side of the road as you make your turn into town. In the riverare bits and boulders of luminous marble which the river has carried down from the hills and riverbanks of Marble, Colorado. Also part of the town’s visible history, there’s the elegant old-timey Redstone Inn—or Redstone Castle. This handsome old edifice, constructed using—I bet you can guess—red stone, hosts big special events nearly every month, offers sleigh rides around the holidays and carriage rides when the weather turns warm, and regularly offers live music with evening meal. The Inn is the place to find a comfortable room for the night, or just join a tour and find out about some of Redstone’s history.
As you prepare for your Redstone adventure, don’t forget to check out the inn and town’s websites for special events, and bring your hiking shoes or cross-country skis, depending on the season! Redstone is the kind of town with every kind of the amenities you’ll hope for to have a delightfully unusual escapade. Visit Glenwood Springs
